BESS (Battery Energy Storage System) Project Status Update

LITHIUM BATTERIES INSTALLATION - GLENWOOD LANDING

Project CANCELLED

Status as of May 23, 2025

As of today, the Jupiter/BESS Battery Storage Project is cancelled.

Status Update as of April 28, 2025:

The Civics, along with many other groups, continue to emphatically oppose this dangerous installation of commercial lithium batteries at the corner of Glenwood Road & Shore Road (Global LLC location.)

The Concern

As stated earlier, the risk is directly related to the batteries overheating, igniting on fire, and the local fire departments not being able to extinguish the fires out due to the highly toxic components of the batteries. There have been a number of fires reported around the country where it has taken local fire departments hours and days to extinguish these fires.

PROGRESS AGAINST THIS PROJECT:

There are now at least three moratoriums in place from local surrounding Towns (Town of Oyster Bay, North Hempstead, Hempstead) that block approval of permits to build these installations.  These moratoriums were approved to last until October and December of this year, allowing for further steps to be taken later in the year.

Next Steps:

We will continue to partner with the Towns of Oyster Bay and North Hempstead to ensure all risks are identified and mitigated before these projects proceed,  and oppose this project until it no longer creates a significant risk to our community.
