New York State is putting all area residents at risk by fast tracking the approval of two interconnected projects without knowing their long-term health and safety impacts.

The Two Projects:

o Propel Project: Install three high-voltage cables
o BESS (Battery Energy Storage System) Project: Install 275MW Lithium Battery Facility in Glenwood Landing

Concerns include: health & safety, long term road closures & traffic jams, environmental hazards, less reliable energy grid, and the potential for lower property values.

Status as of August 18, 2025

Propel Cable and Lithium Battery Projects  – These two proposed projects could significantly impact the community. The lithium battery project, initiated by Jupiter LLC, aimed to purchase the Global Utilities property at Shore Road and Glenwood Road to install large commercial lithium batteries. These batteries pose serious fire risks, with local fire departments and the Nassau County Fire Marshal noting limited control over potential fires, which could force evacuations affecting schools, residents, and businesses.

Thanks to community efforts, Jupiter has withdrawn their effort to purchase the property, but the site remains vulnerable to other companies seeking similar installations.  You can take action by contacting the Town of Oyster Bay and requesting a complete ban on this type of installation in our community.

 

Propel Cable Project – If implemented, this project would disrupt our already congested local streets and roadways, impacting Glen Head, Glenwood Landing, Greenvale, including Glen Cove Road, for several months. The installation of these large, high-capacity energy cables would impact schools, businesses, parents, and emergency vehicle access. The Civics are actively working to stop this project.

As of today, the Jupiter/BESS Battery Storage Project is cancelled.

 

Status as of March 10, 2025

The local Civic groups are continuing to actively oppose these projects.  We are fully engaged in discussions with Town of Oyster Bay officials, and have advocated for temporary moratoriums on the lithium batteries project from the Towns of North Hempstead, Hempstead and Oyster Bay.  All have successfully thus far implemented temporary moratoriums.
The Local Civics are also fully engaged in discussions with adjacent towns regarding the opposition to these projects , and specifically to Propel cable installations which would cause significant disruptions to our local businesses with long term traffic disruptions, and extensive traffic inconveniences to our neighborhoods.
